Brief history of the town

The City of Crystal Lake can trace its origin to two communities which were established in the 1800s. Those communities were generally known as Nunda and Crystal Lake 60014. In 1835, Ziba S. Beardsley had come to the shores of the lake and commented that the “waters were as clear as crystal”, thereby giving the lake its name.

On April 11, 1965, during the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak, a huge devastating tornado destroyed large portions of the city. Six (6) people were killed by the tornado, and 75 wounded. Damages in the city totaled over $1.5 million, as 80 homes and a shopping center were completely destroyed. Disaster shelters were set up to house the homeless, and then-governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner, Jr., personally visited the city to see the damage himself.

The City of Crystal Lake Police Department. The Crystal Lake Police Department is comprised of (66) sixty six sworn officers and sixteen (16) town civilian employees whom strive on a daily basis to provide professional and courteous service to the community. The City of Crystal Lake is located in Illinois approximately 46 miles northwest of the City of Chicago, in McHenry County.
