Spring Grove, Illinois was founded by English settlers in the 1830′s. The area was home to the Pottawatomi Indians who named the Nippersink Creek which flows through Spring Grove, but the indians were relocated from the area by the treaty of 1834. The Spring Grove area was home to an agricultural community, and Fred Hatch constructed the first vertical silo in 1873 which greatly helped farming.
The expansion of the railroad to Spring Grove in 1900 helped with the town’s expansion in real estate and was incorporated as a village in 1902. The train station was closed in the 1960′s, and most of the town’s businesses shut down when the station did. Intermatic moved to Spring Grove in the 1960′s from Chicago and helped build the town back up, employing more than 1,000 people.
